West London Universities Unite to Drive Regional Collaboration and Innovation

West London’s knowledge powerhouse just got stronger, as seven universities and seven local authorities come together for a new era of partnership.

London, 19 September 2025In a bold move to shape the future of one of the UK’s most dynamic sub-regions, West London’s universities and local authorities have announced a landmark commitment to stronger collaboration. Their joint statement of intent is aimed at unlocking innovation, boosting skills, and delivering inclusive growth for West London’s 2.1 million residents.

This marks the most wide-ranging commitment to university-local government collaboration in West London’s history, and one of the most ambitious of its kind anywhere in the capital.

Professor Andrew Jones, Vice-Chancellor of Brunel University, said:
“This is a landmark moment for West London. By joining forces, we’re creating a platform for real change, where universities and councils work hand-in-hand to support communities, drive innovation, and build a more inclusive future.”

Emerging from discussions convened by West London Alliance (WLA) in partnership with West London Business (WLB) and endorsed by the West London Economic Prosperity Board (WLEPB), the initiative brings together senior leaders from seven universities (Arden University, Brunel University, Buckinghamshire New University, Imperial College London, Middlesex University, Sheffield Hallam University and University of West London) alongside the seven West London boroughs.

Cllr Muhammed Butt, Chair of West London’s Economic Prosperity Board and Leader of Brent Council, commented:
“This joint commitment from our universities is a powerful endorsement of the shared vision we’ve been building through the Economic Prosperity Board. It aligns perfectly with WLA’s five growth priorities, from improving orbital transport and strengthening the electrical grid to tackling skills shortages, housing pressures, and homelessness.

West London is a global innovation gateway; by bringing together academic and public sector leadership, we are both investing in our communities and reinforcing West London’s position as a vital engine of London’s economy and a key contributor to the UK’s long-term growth”

The announcement also marks the agreement that the London Borough of Hillingdon will be joining the West London Economic Prosperity Board, further strengthening the region’s collective voice and strategic coordination.

Councillor Steve Tuckwell, Cabinet Member for Planning, Housing and Growth at Hillingdon Council, said: “We’re delighted to join the West London Economic Prosperity Board, which will enable us to work in partnership with our neighbouring boroughs to unlock new opportunities for growth, investment, and innovation. Working closely with neighbouring boroughs and universities across West London will help create exciting growth opportunities for Hillingdon residents and local businesses.”

Building on existing partnerships, the commitment sets out a shared ambition to work more closely on joint initiatives in areas such as skills development, innovation, and public-private engagement, with a view to securing national investment and amplifying West London’s role in shaping the future of the capital.

In doing so, the joint agreement supports the goals of the London Growth Plan and London Growth Mission, both of which aim to create good jobs, improve infrastructure, and drive inclusive growth. It also aligns with the Government’s Industrial Strategy, which focuses on boosting innovation, developing future skills, and investing in clean energy and advanced technologies. By working together, West London’s universities and councils are helping to deliver the local partnerships and long-term planning needed to meet these national priorities.
