28 Mar NATIONAL SUPPORTED INTERNSHIPS DAY
Supported Internships develop transferable skills, knowledge, and attitudes, in preparation for paid employment. Through training and direct work experience young people develop employability skills, self-confidence, job-specific skills and Maths, English and ICT skills. They also experience working alongside employees in a real employment setting.
West London Boroughs are proud to work with many employers and education providers in West London to support the establishment and development of supported internships and supported employment initiatives.
As a result of this collaborative work, more than 500 young people with learning disabilities are now undertaking supported internship programmes in London every year. The average employment achievement rate is over 60%. The details of 42 of these programmes are can be found here: The-2024-Supported-Internship-Guide.pdf (wla.london)
We are so pleased to support National Supported Internship Day, which took place on the 27th March 2024.
This is an important milestone which raises awareness of Supported Internships and what they bring to young adults, their families, and businesses.
- Supported Internships are available to 16–24-year-olds with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). The aim is to help young people move towards permanent employment and adult life.
- Supported Interns are enrolled with a local Further Education college. The majority of the time they learn in the workplace supported by a Job Coach.
